001 Essential Doctrines

When we say "X doctrine is essential," I ask the question, "Essential for what?" Are we saying belief in that doctrine is essential for salvation? Or is it essential to be considered part of historic Christian orthodoxy? Or is it essential to be considered part of traditional Christian orthodoxy? Or is it essential to be considered orthodox in one particular denomination or another?
