Red Hot Calipers
Brake calipers are typically made from high-strength materials like cast iron, aluminum, or, in high-performance applications, carbon composite materials.
Cast iron, commonly used in standard brake calipers, is durable and handles heat well, tolerating temperatures up to around 500°C (932°F) before risking degradation. Aluminum calipers are lighter and often used in sports and luxury vehicles; they dissipate heat efficiently and can tolerate similar temperature ranges but may require additional cooling for extreme use.
Carbon composite calipers, found in high-performance and racing vehicles, offer the best heat resistance, withstanding temperatures above 1,000°C (1,832°F), maintaining strength and reducing heat transfer to other brake components. These materials are chosen based on the vehicle’s needs, balancing durability, weight, and thermal tolerance for optimal braking performance.
