This criticism is nothing new for Sanders, who has long argued that the party is out of touch with the needs of ordinary people. His critiques echo the themes of the progressive populist movement he helped lead, which gained momentum after the Occupy Wall Street movement in 2011. This is why Sanders has consistently identified as a Democratic Socialist and an independent, instead of a Democrat. Although, he has always caucused with Democrats and often encourages his populist supporters to vote for establishment candidates.
