USAT Cape San Juan: One of the Highest Losses of Life due to Shark Attacks after a Torpedo Hit! 🦈

Most people know about the sinking of the USS Indianapolis in 1945, and the massacre of its crew by sharks. But few know that two years before, another US ship was torpedoed and sunk, resulting in almost the same number of US servicemen being killed by sharks - this is the unknown story of the USAT Cape San Juan, and one of the worst mass shark attacks in history.

The SS USAT Cape San Juan was carrying 1464 passengers and crew. The majority of the passengers were men of the 1st Fighter Control Squadron, the 855th Engineer Aviation Battalion, and the 253rd Ordnance Maintenance Company. Casualties from the initial torpedo hit, resultant fire, drowning, and shark attacks totaled 117. Men were rescued by a number of ships and smaller craft, as well as a flying boat.

The sharks responsible were Oceanic White-Tip. Considered to be extremely aggressive towards humans. A breed noted as a danger toward those stranded at sea, and very powerful during feeding frenzies.
