When The Best of Both Worlds Part 1 first aired, it produced a literal showstopping cliff hanger that brought back many Star Trek fans who weren't yet warming up to the Next Generation crew. Although I say that Season 1 wasn't as bad as you remember it, and Season 2 has some brilliant moments, Season 3 really ramped things up. Introducing one of the creepiest villains, the crew face The Borg. They have no particular race to call its own. Rather, they are technological cyborgs that assimilate species and their technologies to function as a collective. Thanks, Q for bringing us to them sooner than we otherwise would have! Established as such, the crew of the Enterprise have to decide what to do when Captain Picard is kidnapped for the Borg's purpose.
