In the conversation with Ana Maria, from Stichting Mijn Roots, we discuss the abusive nature of intercountry adoption. Stories about abuses have always been there, including in Dutch media, however, the Dutch government and related agencies took little or no action against it. One of the reasons is that the interests of the adoptive parents, and not those of the children, were prioritized. A lot of money was involved as well. In this sense, children from former colonized countries such as Indonesia were a product in a market of supply and demand.

From 2017 onwards, the Dutch TV program Zembla has raised awareness for the abuses through several broadcasts. As a result, Dutch politicians asked parliamentary questions that ultimately led to the Joustra committee, which published a damning report in 2019. Ana contributed to both the Zembla broadcasts and the Joustra report.

Het volledige interview staat online! In dit gesprek met Ana Maria van Stichting Mijn Roots praten we over de misstanden van interlandelijke adoptie. Verhalen over misstanden zijn er altijd geweest, ook in de Nederlandse media, maar de Nederlandse overheid en aanverwante instanties kwamen hiertegen niet of nauwelijks in actie. Een van de redenen is dat het belang van de adoptieouders, en niet dat van het kind, voorop stond. Ook was er veel geld mee gemoeid. Kinderen uit voormalig gekoloniseerde landen als Indonesië waren in die zin een product op een markt van vraag en aanbod.

Vanaf 2017 besteedt het Nederlandse onderzoeksprogramma Zembla in meerdere uitzendingen aandacht aan de misstanden. Naar aanleiding hiervan worden Kamervragen gesteld die uiteindelijk zullen leiden tot de commissie Joustra die in 2019 een vernietigend rapport publiceert. Ana heeft zowel aan de Zembla-uitzendingen, als het Joustra rapport bijgedragen.
