What Does 'Day' ('Yom') Mean in Genesis 1?

In this brief excerpt from the course, Intro to the Bible and Theology, Dr. Barber discusses what the word 'day' means ('yom' in the original Hebrew) in Genesis 1.

Many claim that this word can stand for any amount of time, even the billions of years they want to add to Scripture in order to shoe-horn their myth of evolution into the Bible.

As you will see here, the word 'day'/'yom' can only mean a literal 24-hour day, or a smaller portion thereof, in the context of Genesis 1. "Context is king," and "Scripture interprets Scripture." In other words, the author of Scripture, our Creator God Himself, interprets His own word for us, in His own book. The context in Genesis 1 makes crystal clear that every use of the word 'yom'/'day' in that chapter means a literal day. There's no way to add any more time to creation week, than the six days that God describes there.
