Masons Discuss Shriner Hazing and the Impact on Freemasonry

On this episode, newly minted Oriental Guide for Midian Shrine Center in Wichita, Jeremy Woodson, talks about his masonic journey and personal life. Along with host, Past Master Brian Byrd, they share some common stories on how they joined the Shriners and some of the "hazing" they went through.

Jeremy, a nearly 30 year law enforcement veteran, discusses why he joined the Freemasons, why he didn't find the path he was looking for in the Masonic Lodge, and what ultimately led him to join the Shriners. Both Jeremy and Brian are Shriners, and shared their recollection of the journey to obtain the red fez.

The two share their personal experiences with hazing during their initiation into the Shriners and the "hot sands". One discusses a injury sustained during the process, eluding to the physical risks involved. The other reflects on how the hazing activities ultimately forged stronger bonds among the candidates, fostering a sense of camaraderie and shared challenge. Together, their stories shed light on the complexities of initiation practices within fraternal organizations like the Shriners.

Hazing is generally prohibited within Freemasonry and its appendant bodies, such as the Shriners. In states with such legislation, organizations can face legal consequences for hazing, and individual perpetrators may also be held accountable. The scope of these laws varies, but they generally aim to prevent harm while promoting accountability and transparency in group activities
