Trump Taps Matt Gaetz to ‘End Weaponized Government’ – Critics and Swamp Erupt!
President-elect Donald Trump's announcement that U.S. Representative Matt Gaetz (R-FL) will head the Department of Justice (DOJ) has caused a stir in Washington, D.C. The real estate mogul revealed the decision on Wednesday, Nov. 13, via his Truth Social platform. Trump stated that Gaetz, if confirmed as U.S. Attorney General, would "end weaponized government, protect our borders, dismantle criminal organizations, and restore Americans' badly-shattered faith and confidence in the Justice Department."
House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) confirmed that Gaetz submitted his resignation from the House of Representatives in a letter, though it has yet to be formally announced on the House floor. "Out of deference to us, [Gaetz] issued his resignation effective immediately," Johnson explained. "That caught us a bit by surprise, but he mentioned he wanted to avoid too many absences."
NBC News reported that a special election would be held to fill Gaetz's seat, as Florida law allows an eight-week period for such vacancies. The announcement of Gaetz's nomination reportedly surprised officials within the DOJ and FBI, with one senior FBI figure expressing hope that "three or four senators" would block his confirmation. DOJ insiders criticized the decision, with one official calling Gaetz's nomination "insane" and another dismissing it as "laughable."
**Bipartisan Criticism of Gaetz’s Nomination**
Lawmakers from both parties have voiced strong objections to Trump's pick. U.S. Senator-elect Adam Schiff (D-CA), known for his role in promoting claims of Trump-Russia collusion during the 2016 election, criticized the choice. Schiff warned that confirming Gaetz would legitimize potential abuses of the DOJ, urging the Senate to reject his appointment. Similarly, Senator Chris Murphy (D-CT) labeled the nomination a "red alert moment for American democracy," while Senator Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) dismissed Gaetz as "not a serious candidate."
The news also drew significant backlash from media figures. MSNBC correspondent Julie Tserkin noted widespread shock on Capitol Hill, while Jonah Goldberg of *The Dispatch* quipped that Gaetz wouldn't even be fit to host at a Red Lobster, let alone serve as Attorney General. Geraldo Rivera, now with NewsNation, described the nomination as "bad" and called Gaetz a "douche."
**InfoWars Defends the Decision**
In contrast, InfoWars framed the uproar as evidence of Gaetz's suitability for the role, asserting that the reaction from "Deep State Democrats, RINO Republicans, and legacy media" highlights his potential to reform the DOJ. The outlet claimed Gaetz’s track record of opposing government overreach makes him an ideal candidate to hold the justice system accountable.
As the nomination process moves forward, Gaetz’s appointment as Attorney General promises to remain a contentious issue, dividing Washington and sparking debates over the future of the DOJ.
