The Dulla

A camel's dulla is a specialized extension of the soft palate, primarily made up of mucous membrane and connective tissues that are highly elastic and vascularized.

This elasticity allows the dulla to inflate significantly when the male camel exhales air into it during mating displays. The mucous membrane lining the dulla keeps it moist, which helps maintain its flexibility and prevents damage when it is repeatedly inflated and deflated.

The dulla's rich vascularization supports the rapid flow of blood necessary to sustain its expansion. When inflated, the dulla protrudes out of the mouth as a large, reddish-pink sac, often accompanied by the release of a frothy saliva, further enhancing the visual and auditory display used to attract females and establish dominance over rival males.
