We are under a maritime law, it's why you stand in a dock in a court. Why you're born out of the birth canal. It's why in school, the president and vice president are referred to as principal and vice principal.

Beds are also referred to as "berths" and the meaning of "berthing" is of course usually given as to bert a ship which means "to tie up and stay in place", as in you are tied to your bed. You are tied to a dream. You can even liquidate your assets, etc.
