Jailed Cartoonists and the Cartoons that Put Them in JAIL

This week on @caglecast we discuss the plague of intolerant regimes around the world that are jailing, harassing, beating, suing and otherwise chilling editorial cartoonists. The world can be a scary place for political cartoonists! We have three great guests and lots of cartoons from persecuted cartoonists.

TERRY ANDERSON has been the executive director of the Cartoonists Rights Network International for five years, he's a cartoonist who drew for many years for The Glasgow Herald. He's a winner of the the Prix Gérard Vandenbrouck in Saint-Just-le-Martel for service to the profession; the first non-Francophone to be awarded the honor

ZEHRA OMEROGLU
draws in Leman, Gececi, Mağara, Tarama Ucu, Ot, Mis and on tv channel France 24 and many other comic magazines. She generally deals with the absurdity of the so-called seriousness of everyday life, women’s stories, taboos, human psychology and our inner conflicts. She's being tried for obscenity in Turkey and faces a sentence of up to 3 years in prison. Her trial was postponed for the umpteenth time earlier this year, because of the absence of the judge in charge of the case. Her next hearing is in February 2025

Emad Hajjaj, Amman Jordan. Emad draws cartoons for the Alaraby Aljadeed Alghad Newspaper in London and he's part of our Cagle.com syndication group. Emad recently got his Green Card and moved to the USA. He was jailed in Amman Jordan for a cartoon that "insulted an Arab Regime" and it wasn't possible for him to continue his career there. Now he's free to draw everything he wants from Richmond Virginia.
