How To Engrave Glass On a CNC Router [With A Drag Bit], Glass Etching

This video shows you how to engrave (etch) on glass and soft metals on a CNC router using drag bit engravers. It also shows you how to set up the CNC router for engraving the glass and what engraving tools you will need. Engraving on glass is very different than carving. In fact, some projects can only use this method. when you don't have an engraving machine, a CNC router works just as well.

Etching with a drag bit is much easier and less messy than wood carving. There is glass dust but it remains very close to the etch line. A quick vacuum cleans it quickly.

This method also works with brass, aluminum, and any other soft metals.

It is STRONGLY recommended to use a spring-loaded drag bit when engraving on glass with a CNC router. This eliminates possible variations in pressure that can break the glass. It also is very forgiving for a spoil board that is uneven...you can have 0.25" variation and will still get a good project without damage or glass breaking.

Glass engraving can be done on any CNC router.

CNC settings for the diamond drag bit:
→ Spindle remains off
→ the tool is setup as an endmill in the tool library
→ Feed 30 inches per minute
→ Depth of cut 0.05 to 0.1 inches

If you search Amazon for a spring-loaded drag bit, you will find one that is not Widgetworks brand. DO NOT BUY THAT ONE IF YOU WANT TO ENGRAVE ON GLASS. The ratings repeatedly say the tip breaks on glass and other hard materials.
