Jamestown Brick Homes
It has been said by historians that the first brick structures in the American colonies were constructed with imported brick.
The first Jamestown settlers built straw huts, and afterward, wooden houses. The first brick homes were built in 1638 when oyster shells were heated to create mortar. Although it has been reported that many brick homes were constructed, only twelve foundations were discovered by archealogists.
The records in Williamsburg, Virginia reflect that homemade brick was used as early as 1705. We have to remember that Williamsburg did not become the home of records until 1699, some twenty years or so after Jamestown was destroyed by fire.
While transporting bricks, glass, nails, wood, etc. from England was quite expensive, it is understandable why the first settlers were skilled craftsmen who employed local resources to make silverware, candles, pottery, etc.
