BEAM – NASA is Developing an On-Demand Energy Solution for Air Mobility
Typical aircraft like the one you fly in today must have an additional amount of fuel or fuel reserves for them to get safely where they're going. How do you deliver energy over distance without having towers and wires in the sky, or a flying gas station to fill you up? The answer is wireless power transmission or power beaming. That's exactly what NASA’s BEAM (Beaming Energy for Air Mobility) team are working on to help solve this.
NASA is developing an energy on-demand service for electric air taxis, large drones and other electrified air platforms that make up the Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) ecosystem. The BEAM team is currently prototyping an energy delivery system for electromagnetic power beaming. This technology is planned to be implemented at future airports to add an additional energy delivery service that would increase overall vehicle performance and transportation safety while reducing the load and maintenance lifecycle of flight batteries.
