Israel is using the situation in Syria to its advantage to create a huge buffer zone, said Marina Miron, a post-doctorate researcher in the Department of War Studies at King's College London.

"Syria has been a very important strategic partner for Iran that also allowed transfer weapons to Lebanon. Now Israel is taking this opportunity, having weakened Hezbollah, to establish this buffer zone and also take the Golan Heights - not for security reasons, but for resources such as water, in order to minimise the Iranian influence and cut off Iran from Hezbollah," she told Al Jazeera.
