Chapter 3: Homicide Desk

The Red Lipstick Murder: Phelps, now working in the Homicide division, investigates the brutal murder of Celine Henry, whose body is discovered with severe head trauma, lipstick scrawls, and signs of assault. Clues such as a bloodied tire iron, a missing necklace, and a trail leading to the victim’s lover, Jacob Henry, seem damning. However, Phelps begins to suspect a connection to a larger serial killer case involving the Black Dahlia.

The Golden Butterfly: Phelps and his partner, Rusty Galloway, take on the case of Deidre Moller, a housewife found strangled in a park. Suspicion initially falls on her husband, Hugo Moller, who has a history of violence. Further investigation, including the discovery of her butterfly brooch and Hugo’s bloodied shoes, uncovers the grim truth. But inconsistencies in the case suggest this murder, too, might be linked to the Black Dahlia killer.

The Silk Stocking Murder: The body of Evelyn Summers, a struggling actress and alcoholic, is discovered in a vacant lot. Her mutilated body and the use of a silk stocking point to a deeply personal and ritualistic killing. Phelps pieces together Evelyn’s final days, including her visit to a liquor store and connections to a local bartender. As evidence mounts, Phelps uncovers darker patterns that tie Evelyn’s murder to the ongoing serial killings.
