The European aviation industry faces unprecedented challenges due to Russian airspace restrictions, creating an uneven competitive landscape. European carriers must take longer routes to Asia, significantly increasing operational costs and flight times, while Chinese airlines maintain direct access through Russian airspace.

This disparity has led to a dramatic shift in market dynamics, with Chinese carriers now dominating China-Europe routes, controlling about 82% of flights this winter. European airlines are struggling with increased fuel costs, longer flight times, and higher operational expenses, forcing many to reduce or suspend services to Asian destinations.

The situation has sparked calls for regulatory intervention from European airline executives, with some suggesting that all flights into Europe should avoid Russian airspace to ensure fair competition. However, the challenge extends beyond just route planning, as European carriers also face additional environmental costs that their Chinese counterparts don't have to consider.
