Genesis 34 is likely one of the most violent chapters in the whole Bible. There is rape, there is murder, there is enslavement, so yes it is sordid. Could Jacob have prevented all of this from happening? Of course he could have and should have. We may wonder why the Holy Spirit chose to include such a chapter in the Bible. But Paul says that all Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction and for training in righteousness. Yes, there is much to learn in this chapter about getting way too close to the world.
