A swirling mass

A disease born
Given freedom to roam
To nest in the red streams

A slow death

A cold wind blew

Outside others fall to their knees
Their feet cut open
Their eyes burning
Their mouths dry
With their arms extended

Blistered by a black sun

You see children poisoned
Dancing in place
Drinking stale waters
From family heirlooms
Forced to reinterpret
Though they think it novel
Tales dredged up from cold earth

Whose face is ashen gray
Kicked and beaten
The life sucked out of her
Poured down a drain
That runs into sewers

Fed stale food

You look at your feet
But the image grabs you by the hair
Pulls your head up
Blood and sweat roll down your face
Mix with the tears
The taste of salt in your mouth
The smell of piss at your feet

Your body trembles
The eyes roll back into your head
The tongue lies dried and thickened
Your words cannot be uttered
Your cries can't escape
Your thoughts spin out of control
Your face burns red
Your pleas go unanswered
Your forgiveness ignored
Your mind blackens with fear
Your hope fades from view
And kisses you goodbye
