R.C. Sproul Vs John Calvin on predestination!
John Calvin’s teaching that men are not self-determined by their so-called “free will,” but are determined by God in all things, logically contradicts R.C. Sproul’s teaching found in chapter three of his book "Chosen By God."
Sproul’s teaching is:
"At every point of choice we are free and self-determined."
(Chosen By God, Chapter 3, page 59).
Having looked at Calvin’s teachings in the 1540s, let’s move on.
In the early 1550s, John Calvin wrote a treatise on God’s absolute predestination of all things. It was titled "The Eternal Predestination of God."
In this work, Calvin rejects the notion that men have the power of self-determination, which was being taught at that time by a Roman Catholic monk named Pighius. By contrast, Calvin taught from Scripture alone that all the wills of men are determined by God. Calvin shows us Pighius’ Roman Catholic position when he writes:
"The example of Pighius, to make men the potters instead of God, and to leave each one to shape out his destiny by his own virtue."
