Amnesia: The Dark Decent | Gameplay Part 1
Amnesia: The Dark Descent, a first person survival horror game that puts you in the shoes of Daniel as he wakes up in a desolate castle, barely remembering anything about his past. Exploring the eerie pathways, you must also take part of Daniel's troubled memories. The horror does not only come from the outside, but from the inside as well. A disturbing odyssey into the dark corners of the human mind awaits.
In this playthrough we cover:
Act 1: Descent into Madness
Rainy Hall: The game begins with protagonist Daniel awakening in the Rainy Hall of Brennenburg Castle, disoriented and with no memory of how he got there. As he explores, he finds notes revealing that he intentionally erased his memory to escape the horrors of his past. Strange whispers and a creeping sense of dread set the tone for his journey.
Old Archives: In the Old Archives, Daniel encounters early glimpses of the supernatural as rooms shift unnaturally and eerie voices echo through the halls. Ancient tomes and documents hint at the castle's dark history, establishing the ominous backdrop of the game.
Entrance Hall: The Entrance Hall serves as the castle’s hub, with branching paths leading to deeper, darker areas. Here, Daniel discovers the first signs of the Shadow, an otherworldly force stalking him. The hall’s grandeur contrasts sharply with the terror that lurks within.
Archives: Daniel searches through dusty study rooms and shelves of old books, piecing together more of his fragmented past. He finds Wilhelm’s Letter, which reveals troubling experiments conducted in the castle. The environment is rich with lore, but the sense of being watched heightens.
Wine Cellar: After gathering the necessary chemicals, Daniel descends into the Wine Cellar, a dark, claustrophobic area littered with broken bottles and bloodstains. Here, he encounters his first hostile Gatherer, forcing him to rely on stealth and darkness to survive.
Laboratory: In the eerie Laboratory, Daniel uses the chemicals from the Wine Cellar to create acid capable of dissolving organic barriers. This marks his first major puzzle-solving moment, emphasizing his reliance on intellect over combat.
Refinery: The Refinery is an unsettling descent deeper into the castle, blocked initially by the organic growths Daniel dissolves with the acid. The area introduces more intense scares as Daniel confronts his helplessness against the horrors within the castle.
Cellar Archives: Flooded and shadowy, the Cellar Archives are a terrifying sequence as Daniel must navigate the space while pursued by an invisible water-dwelling creature. The splashes of the monster serve as a chilling reminder of the danger lurking unseen.
Archive Tunnels: Narrow, crumbling tunnels connect the Archive areas, forcing Daniel to rely on limited light sources to keep his sanity intact. The oppressive atmosphere hints at the labyrinthine nature of the castle and the mounting psychological toll on Daniel.
Act 2: Machinery of Madness
Back Hall: The Back Hall is a brief reprieve, a tranquil hub with a fountain at its center. However, it holds access to several ominous areas, including the Storage, Guest Room, Study, and Machine Room. Here, Daniel learns more about Alexander, the baron of Brennenburg, and his role in the castle’s atrocities.
Storage: A descent into darkness, the Storage is where Daniel retrieves essential machinery parts, but it’s fraught with danger. The environment is filled with Growlers, and Daniel’s only hope is to remain unseen. The area showcases the game’s mastery of tension and resource management.
Guest Room: A seemingly safer area, the Guest Room contains personal effects and notes from Daniel’s past. He finds a broken lock and reconstructs his plan to escape the castle. This area is lighter in horror but rich in storytelling.
Study: The Study provides key lore as Daniel examines scientific notes and experiments conducted by Alexander. The decayed room and ominous howling from outside foreshadow the castle’s deep connection to dark forces. Daniel finds clues to his next objectives, balancing exploration with dread.
Machine Room: The Machine Room challenges Daniel’s puzzle-solving skills as he works to repair the castle’s elevator. The complex machinery and eerie silence create an atmosphere of foreboding as Daniel realizes how far the castle’s secrets extend.
