Lumumba's Africa. Struggle against the colonizers. Ep 18 | RT Documentary
10 months ago
1.2K
African resistance to colonisation dates back to the 15th century, when the Portuguese first arrived on the continent’s shores. They were soon followed by the English, French, and Italians.
Some of the most notable battles were led by the Dahomey Amazons, the world’s only all-female military unit. Tribes from present-day Nigeria and Côte d'Ivoire also played leading roles in this struggle. Resistance efforts spread across the continent from the earliest days, eventually giving rise to political movements that elevated the fight to a new level.
In the 20th century, the fight for freedom produced a generation of influential African leaders, including Patrice Lumumba, Kwame Nkrumah, Nelson Mandela, and others.
