Nato expansion since 1949

NATO, or the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, was established on April 4, 1949, when twelve founding member nations signed the North Atlantic Treaty in Washington, D.C. These founding members were: Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Iceland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, United Kingdom, United States

This alliance was formed as a collective defense against the spread of Soviet influence in Europe during the early years of the Cold War.

German Unification: During the negotiations for German reunification in 1990, assurances were given by Western leaders to Gorbachev regarding NATO's eastward expansion. The most notable was from U.S. Secretary of State James Baker, who suggested to Gorbachev that NATO would not move "one inch eastward" in the context of German unification. However, these assurances were not formalized in treaties.

The narrative around promises of NATO non-expansion has been contentious, with various interpretations and claims regarding whether Gorbachev was misled or if there was a misunderstanding.
