Jimmy Carter: The Peacemaker
James Earl Carter, former Georgia governor and the 39th President of the United States (1976-1981) died Sunday at his home after a long illness.
Carter had marked his 100th birthday in October, the only U.S. president to live for a century.
World leaders representing some of the United States' closest allies as well as nations friendly to the country memorialized former President Jimmy Carter as a peacemaker and humanitarian for the ages.
U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer paid tribute to Carter's spirit of helping others, particularly his country, in helming the historic Camp David Accords, the peace treaty between Israel and Egypt, during his presidency and, afterward, promoting democracy and low-cost housing.
"His presidency will be remembered for the historic Camp David Accords between Israel and Egypt, and it was that lifelong dedication to #peace that saw him receive the Nobel Peace prize," Starmer said in a statement late Sunday.
Starmer noted that though Carter's presidential legacy is clouded by the Iran hostage crisis, which began in late 1979, he made bold and lasting moves long after he left the White House.
The Arab League, which is made up of 22 countries in the Middle East and North Africa, on Monday commended Carter's "tireless efforts to achieve peace in the Middle East, culminating in the signing of the Egyptian-Israeli Peace Treaty in 1979."
President Carter's one-term presidency was marred by soaring domestic inflation, unemployment, a sagging economy, and tumultuous times abroad. He presided over a Cold War against Communism, the Iran hostage crisis and the Soviet/Afghan war, yet always resisted military intervention in foreign conflicts -- usually against the counsel of his top White House advisors.
His predecessor John F. Kennedy once said that he thought the primary job of every U.S. president is to preserve the peace, and famously quipped that he wanted the epitaph on his gravestone to read "he kept us out of war."
During Carter's short presidency, the United States military never fired a single shot in anger at any foreign adversary. That, in itself, is an accomplishment that should be admired.
The history books will no doubt say that #JimmyCarter was a better ex-president than a president; historians will highlight his humanitarian efforts in eradicating the guinea worm and river blindness, as a mediator in the Middle East and the Korean conflict, and with Habitat for Humanity -- as well as his prolific authorship of 32 books in his post-presidential years.
On this Maverick News tribute to Jimmy #Carter, we highlight one of Carter's important foreign policy successes which is too often overlooked: his initiative for peace and friendship with China.
Chinese President Xi Jinping expressed his "deep condolences" over Carter’s passing on Sunday, and commended the late president for strengthening U.S.-China relations, according to state news agency Xinhua.
Xi said Carter was a promoter and decision-maker in the establishment of China-U.S. diplomatic relations.
The Carter administration switched Washington's diplomatic recognition to the People’s Republic of China in Beijing from the Republic of China in Taipei, severing ties with the self-governing island to acknowledge only one China. China maintains that Taiwan is part of its territory to this day.
In this video Maverick News co-hosts Rick Walker (a Canadian conservative) and Lori Spencer (an American libertarian and former Democrat) share their firsthand memories of living through the Jimmy Carter presidency and give an unflinching analysis of Carter's successes and failures.
This edition of Maverick News originally aired on February 21, 2023 -- the day it was announced that President Carter was entering hospice care after refusing any further medical interventions.
His wife of 77 years, Rosalynn Carter, entered hospice care soon after her husband, and preceded him in death last November. Jimmy and Rosalynn's lifelong love story was one for the ages -- they first met as babies and were childhood sweethearts. It was hard to imagine one of them living very long without the other.
Indeed, when Jimmy Carter passed away only a year after Rosalynn on Sunday, all of us felt comforted in knowing that these two soulmates were reunited in heaven.
I hope you enjoy this Maverick News farewell to President Jimmy Carter.
