Tales from a UN Peacekeeper - With Shane Caudwell - X-Candidates 97

We are joined by former Australian Air Force and Army aircraft mechanic and United Nations Peacekeeper Captain, Shane Caudwell.

Shane entered military service at 15-years-old as an apprentice aircraft mechanic, which saw him work on Australia’s F1-11 aircraft and Blackhawk helicopters.

In 1994, he joined the United Nations as a Peacekeeper and was quickly promoted to Team Leader and C4 Captain. His first deployment was to Bosnia and specifically Sarajevo, which had been under siege since 1992.

Shane shares with us his memories from working for the UN, as well as what he thought of those around him in other units. He also shares how he was involved in smuggling Iron Maiden’s frontman, Bruce Dickinson and his solo band at the time, Skunkworks, into Sarajevo for a concert. Recently, these events were turned into the documentary, ‘Scream for Me Sarajevo’.

Shane gives us his opinion of the United Nations and gives us his experience of how it operates internally. Shane also details why he now plans to leave Australia and how he has lost hope for his homeland.
