NAPOLEON's DEADLIEST Battle: The Battle of Borodino

The Battle of Borodino unfolded on September 7, 1812, during Napoleon Bonaparte's ill-fated invasion of Russia. The clash between the French Grande Armée, led by Napoleon, and the Russian Imperial Army, commanded by Mikhail Kutuzov, marked one of the bloodiest battles of the Napoleonic Wars.

The two armies converged near the village of Borodino, each numbering around 130,000 to 150,000 troops. The day began with a massive artillery barrage as the French sought to break the Russian defenses. The battle was fierce, with brutal fighting around key positions like the Raevsky Redoubt and the Great Redoubt. The Russian army, fighting tenaciously, inflicted heavy casualties on the French.

The Raevsky Redoubt changed hands several times, stained with the blood of soldiers from both sides. The French managed to capture the position, only to face relentless Russian counterattacks. The Great Redoubt witnessed ferocious hand-to-hand combat, with neither side yielding easily.

As the sun set over the battlefield, both armies were battered and exhausted. Despite heavy losses, the French retained control of the field. However, the Russian army, knowing the strategic importance of Moscow, strategically withdrew during the night, leaving the French in apparent possession of the battlefield.

The Battle of Borodino, while technically a French victory, proved to be a Pyrrhic one. The Grande Armée suffered staggering casualties, and Napoleon's dreams of a decisive victory and a quick resolution to the Russian campaign were shattered.

It was the bloodiest single day battle at the time, with the French loosing about 30,000 men and the Russians about 45,000.

Though it was the deadliest battle of the Napoleonic Wars, the battle of Borodino was not the decisive battle he was hoping for and the Russians refused to come to terms.
