What is the Role of the Government?

With over 400 agencies in the US federal government, a person can get pretty confused about the government's role is in our society. We would be shocked to see how small the government would actually be if we went back to the model that the founding fathers created. Do you think the founding fathers got it right by giving responsibilities to health and wealth to the individual, or do you think the government has a responsibility for providing for it's people?
