October 2, 1836 - Come And Take It! Revolution Begins

Although there had been other skirmishes at the beginning of the Texas Revolution in 1835, the battle of Gonzales (Come and Take It) is known as the battle that kicked off the Texas Revolution.

The Texas Revolution was actually a part of what was a larger Mexican civil war between the Centralists and the Federalists. The Yucatán, Zacatecas, and Coahuila all rose up in revolt against Santa Anna’s Centralist government. Santa Anna crushed those other rebellions. Only Texas was able to gain independence.
