Wick systems are low tech but extremely efficient when it comes to water usage. All of the nutrient solution is taken up by the plants, and you can simply add water and walk away for multiple days after you dial in your system. I have about 100gallons of the soilless mixture between all the plants and it takes 25 gallons of water to fully saturate the pots to the soil surface. I like to add 20 gallons when they are dry and 10 gallons when they are starting to get thirsty. This has helped me avoid the problems that come with soggy soil as coco and sphagnum hold much more water than wood based potting soil does.
