Fisk Free Colored School Opened In Nashville, Tennessee, During The Reconstruction Era. Founded By John Ogden, Erastus Milo Cravath, And Edward Parmelee Smith Of The American Missionary Association (AMA), The Institution Aimed To Provide Education To Freedmen. The School Was Named After Clinton B. Fisk, A Union General And Assistant Commissioner Of The Freedmen's Bureau Of Tennessee, Who Secured A Site In Former Military Barracks Near Union Station And Provided $30,000 Of Government Funds For Its Endowment.

Within The First Several Months, Enrollment Rose To 900, Indicating The Strong Desire For Education Among Local Freedmen. Student Ages Ranged From Seven To Seventy.

In August 1867, The Institution Was Incorporated As Fisk University, Shifting Its Focus To Higher Education. This Transition Was Crucial In Addressing The Educational Needs Of African Americans In The Post-Civil War South.

Financial Challenges Soon Emerged, Threatening The University's Survival. In Response, Treasurer And Music Professor George L. White Organized A Student Choir, The Fisk Jubilee Singers, To Raise Funds. On October 6, 1871, The Group Embarked On A National Fundraising Tour. Their Performances Introduced Audiences To Spirituals And Were Pivotal In Preserving This Musical Tradition. The Tour Raised Nearly $50,000, Funding The Construction Of Jubilee Hall, The First Permanent Building For The Education Of Freedmen In The South, Completed In 1876.

Fisk University Holds The Distinction Of Being The Oldest Institution For Higher Education In Nashville. In 1930, It Became The First Historically Black Institution To Gain Accreditation By The Southern Association Of Colleges And Schools (SACS).

The University's Commitment To Academic Excellence Is Evident In Its Contributions To The African American Community. Fisk Has Graduated More African Americans Who Go On To Earn PhDs In The Natural Sciences Than Any Other Institution.

Fisk University's Establishment In 1866 Was A Significant Milestone In American History. It Provided Educational Opportunities To Formerly Enslaved Individuals And Played A Crucial Role In Preserving African American Musical Heritage Through The Fisk Jubilee Singers. The University's Enduring Legacy Continues To Influence Higher Education And African American Culture.
