Vishnu Pendyala, an artificial intelligence (AI) expert from San Jose State University, explores the pressing need for AI regulation, in today’s episode.

“These models hallucinate and produce misinformation,” he said, “and they are used to produce misinformation as well, like deepfakes and fraud. There’s so much fraud happening.”

Pendyala warns of the risks posed by AI, including bias and false information, and emphasizes the importance of data provenance—or keeping a historical record of the origin and transmission of data—to combat these challenges effectively.

“We don’t know how a decision has been produced,” Pendyala said, addressing the complexity and opacity of AI systems, which makes them difficult to control or regulate effectively.

He also highlights the environmental cost of AI, noting that the emissions generated by training a single large language model are equivalent to a car’s lifetime emissions.

In addition to his technical insights, Pendyala shares his background in math, his passion for music, and his thoughts on the intersection of religion and science.
