Sarah Blossom Ware shares what biohacking is, and why we should be excited about this growing movement of Do It Yourself scientists.

Dr. Sarah Blossom Ware is the founder of Bioblaze Labs in South Elgin, IL.

Bioblaze Labs is a fully-functional biology lab with centrifuges, PCR machines, beakers and chemicals that members of the general public can use to perform original biological experiments.

Sarah grew up in rural Arkansas with no electricity or running water. She is now a biology professor at Benedictine University and College of DuPage and is on the advisory board of Hub88, a new tech innovation hub in Naperville.

Sarah strongly advocates for open source sharing of scientific information and for the democratization of science.

Sarah’s Gene sequencing device, called the MinION – is a portable device that can sequence RNA and DNA on the go.

DNA sequencing is a laboratory technique that determines the exact order of the four chemical building blocks (bases: adenine, thymine, cytosine, and guanine) that make up a DNA molecule, essentially "reading" the genetic code stored within the DNA sequence, which provides information about an organism's traits and potential for diseases; this is done by identifying the order of these bases, represented by the letters A, C, G, and T, in a DNA strand.

DNA sequencing is important because it allows scientists to determine the exact order of nucleotides in a DNA molecule, which provides critical information about an organism's genetic makeup, enabling them to identify genes, understand how they function, diagnose genetic diseases, develop personalized medicine, and study evolution by comparing DNA sequences across different species. 

The Human Genome Sequencing Project took over a decade and cost over $2 Billion. This small device costs just $1,000. See sources #2 and #3 below.
