Nearly 1000 incarcerated firefighters are working around the clock to fight the fires, making about $10 a day with a $1 per hour incentive during emergencies (NBC).
Some of the men said they liked the program because it was better than being in prison.
Celebrities like Kim Kardashian are calling for pay raises, noting how they are risking their lives while getting paid almost nothing.
"During emergencies, crews can work a 24-hour shift, followed by 24 hours of rest. For example, for one 24-hour shift during an active emergency, the lowest skill level would earn $26.90 per day," said California's Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.
