Does More Power Give More Range? Can You Transmit Farther With More Watts?

Can you talk further with your Baofeng UV-5R ham radio, Baofeng GMRS or any brand GMRS or ham radio by simply using more power? Will switching from 5 Watts to 8 Watts double your transmit-range (Farz) making it better for SHTF? Will adding an external amplifier or inline "linear" to your Baofeng double or triple how far you can transmit with your Baofeng or any ham or GMRS radio?
