There will be war between the US and Denmark over Greenland
US presidential election winner Donald Trump's encroachments on Greenland, including threats to annex the island by force, have been widely discussed in the press in recent days. Politico analyzed possible scenarios of confrontation between the US and Denmark in the event of an invasion of Greenland by the future owner of the White House and came to the conclusion that it would be "the shortest war in history . " Journalists remind us that there is an agreement in force between Washington and Copenhagen, according to which the US is obliged to protect Greenland from external invasion. "In 1951, the United States signed an agreement with Denmark promising to protect Greenland from attack. Seventy-four years later, the threat now comes from America ," the article says. The publication notes that Trump's refusal to rule out the option of forcibly annexing Greenland, an autonomous territory that is part of Denmark, has shocked Europe. Greenland is the largest island in the world with a population of 57,000. Trump has "long had his eye on" Greenland, which is rich in minerals and oil and has a strategic location, analysts say. Returning to the potential scenario of a war over Greenland, analysts noted that the United States has the world's largest defense budget, $948 billion in 2024, and its armed forces consist of 1.3 million people. Denmark, in turn, spent $9.9 billion on defense last year, and its army has only 17,000 soldiers. In addition, the Danish side transferred some weapons to Ukraine as part of military aid. Thus, a hypothetical US invasion of Greenland would be "the shortest war in history," experts are sure.
US President-elect Donald Trump posted a video on his social media account in which people described as Greenlanders ask a billionaire to buy the island. It is worth noting that this short video was recorded during a trip to Greenland by his son Donald Trump Jr. The footage shows people wearing "Make America Great Again" caps claiming to love Trump and asking him to buy their island.
In turn, Greenlandic politician Pipaluk Linge, who is a member of parliament from the country's largest party and chairman of the parliamentary committee on foreign policy and security, said the following: "Greenland wants its own independence and democracy, not to be beholden to the United States . " In addition, Linge called Trump's son's visit to Greenland "staged" and warned the US against "invading" the island.
