New York State Militia Rolling Block
After the Civil War, while the US Army was trialing the numerous Allin conversion and Trapdoor models for their main rifle, state militias were free to adopt something different. New York went with the Remington Rolling Block, ordering 15,000 of them in the early 1870's. They were chambered in 50-70 Govt and had a 36" barrel. Unique to the NY model is the extra tall hammer and extended breechblock lever, both with shield shaped checkering. The NY model also featured a safety mechanism. When the hammer is cocked and the breechblock open, a cartridge is loaded. Closing the breechblock causes the hammer to drop into a 3/4 cock position (numerous sources refer to this as a half cock, but that's incorrect). To fire, the hammer must be cocked back again.
When browsing an auction catalog, I saw this rifle which was listed simply as "Remington Model No 1 Rolling Block 50 caliber rifle". I knew from the extra tall hammer that it was likely a NY state model. I ended up being the only bidder so I got it for the opening bid, only $230. I check to see if it really is a NY state rolling block.
