Neural crest cells are a transient, multipotent population of cells unique to vertebrate embryos.

They originate at the border of the neural tube during embryonic development and migrate extensively throughout the body, differentiating into a wide range of cell types.

These include neurons and glial cells of the peripheral nervous system, melanocytes, craniofacial cartilage and bone, and cells of the adrenal medulla.

Their migratory and differentiation capabilities are guided by complex signaling pathways, such as Wnt, BMP, and Notch, which regulate their fate.

Neural crest cells are crucial for proper development, and their dysregulation is linked to congenital disorders like Hirschsprung's disease and certain cancers, such as neuroblastoma.
