In 2009, researchers at Oregon State University unexpectedly discovered a new pigment, YInMn Blue, during an unrelated experiment. The team, led by Professor Mas Subramanian, was studying manganese oxides for their potential in electronics when they combined yttrium, indium, and manganese oxides and exposed them to extreme heat, resulting in a vibrant blue compound. This novel pigment stood out due to its brighter, richer color and remarkable stability, making it resistant to fading and environmental degradation. The pigment's crystal structure and non-toxic composition contribute to its stability and safety. YInMn Blue can also reflect heat, making it an energy-efficient option for coatings on buildings or vehicles.
