Why Did God Put The Tree Of The Knowledge Of Good And Evil In The Garden Of Eden?

It's reasonable to wonder, if Adam and Eve's disobedience cursed the whole human race with suffering, pain, and death as the consequences of sin, why did God put the object of their disobedience within such easy reach in the first place and not prevent the serpent from tempting them with it?
