Carjacking Suspect Shot by MNPD During Apartment Complex Surveillance

A carjacking suspect is hospitalized in stable condition at Skyline Medical Center after being shot late Tuesday night by the MNPD Violent Crimes Unit at Cumberland Crossing Apartments on Rio Vista Drive.

Detective Brian Quigley, a nearly six-year MNPD veteran, and Officer Zachary Wright, a 2 ½ -year veteran, had spotted a stolen green Mercury Marquis sedan backed into an apartment complex parking spot. The car was taken Sunday night in an armed carjacking on Cheyenne Boulevard. While surveilling the vehicle, Jason P. Brown, 20, of Backstretch Boulevard in Antioch, got out and began walking toward the apartment building with gun in hand. The officers reported that Brown directed his pistol toward them. Detective Quigley wearing a marked police vest yelled at Brown. Brown continued to the building entrance and dropped his pistol less than a second before Detective Quigley fired. Officer Wright also discharged his service pistol. The officers rendered medical aid to Brown prior to him being transported to Skyline.

The owner of the Mercury Marquis reported that he was on Cheyenne Boulevard visiting his mother Sunday night when he walked out to the car. He said two men armed with pistols approached him and robbed him of his phone and car keys. Officers and detectives have been looking for the car since. When it was spotted tonight, the license plate had been removed and replaced with a temp tag.

At the time of tonight’s incident, Brown was on supervised probation for an attempted auto theft conviction in 2023.
