The U.S. government did the exact same thing during the great depression.
During the Great Depression, the US government, through the Agricultural Adjustment Act (AAA), destroyed approximately 10 million acres of cotton crops by having farmers plow them under, as a way to manage agricultural surplus and raise prices; this also included the slaughter of millions of livestock, like 6 million pigs, to reduce the market glut. As many as 750,000 farms went under from 1930 to 1935, either through bankruptcy or foreclosure
