Deck Profiles: BRS - SSP Episode 5 | Ursaluna ex
Episode 5 of Deck Profiles BRS - SSP will be about Blood Moon Ursaluna ex.
My goodness. That is all I have to say. Regarding the control archetype historically in the Pokemon Trading Card Game.
If you have played the Pokemon Trading Card Game throughout many formats, you have probably experienced "control decks". They come in all shapes and sizes, but generally their goal, and if you play card games, you know what I'm talking about, is to prevent your opponent from playing the game. Control decks in Pokemon are notoriously powerful in that they rely on very hard to beat strategies when they gain power in formats. Historically, though, formats haven't really been delved deep into, so the power level of these control decks hasn't really been analyzed too deeply, but nonetheless, you look through results for them, and they have plenty.
This video is about a control deck, but a more wholesome look at them. Control has been given a bad name in Pokemon, and this is my contribution to helping control get a better name in Pokemon.
So, Blood Moon Ursaluna ex is a control archetype. It thrives in whittling down your opponent's board to the point where it can come in and clean up with ease. It is a very high maintenance attack, so it needs this to function. If you've played the games, and you've played VGC, you know that this is how Blood Moon Ursaluna functions in the game. Blood Moon Ursaluna ex was designed to be built around efficient attackers that can take prizes and trade prizes with the opponent to the point where it can come in with no worries and win the game for you.
However, Blood Moon Ursaluna ex hasn't seen play in this way just yet. It has been mainly used as a tech card to win in the late game where you otherwise wouldn't be able to set up an attack. If it was designed to be played this way, it would have a much more strict attack condition, similar to something like Briar, where you can only use it if your opponent has 2 prizes exactly. So, this is not what Pokemon intended when they made this card.
Control archetypes need to be explored more in the Pokemon Trading Card Game, as there are a lot of control archetypes in formats that can help alleviate the miserable state that formats can become as a result of pay to win archetypes taking over formats.
Thank you for listening and I hope you continue to support my work.
