General Olusegun Obasanjo, the military Head of State of Nigeria, handing power over to the elected civilian civilian President, Alhaji Shehu Shagari.

Shagari became the first civilian leader of Nigeria since January 1966. He was sworn in by the Chief Justice of the Federation, Justice Fatai Williams.
