The Greatest Speech In History? Alexander The Great And The Opis Mutiny | Epic History

Alexander the Great stands as one of history's most remarkable figures. At the young age of 20, he ascended to the throne of Macedonia, a peripheral Greek kingdom, in 336 BC. In just twelve short years before his death, Alexander had subjugated Greece under Macedonian rule, annihilated the formidable Persian Empire, and led his army into the heart of modern Afghanistan and up to the borders of India. At Opis, Alexander confronted a mutiny by his Macedonian soldiers, who were incensed by his decision to send some of them back home while seemingly favoring his new Asian subjects and embracing their customs. Alexander swiftly and mercilessly dealt with the instigators, and then, according to 'The Anabasis' by Roman historian Arrian, delivered a passionate speech to his army, chastising his troops for their betrayal. Although the speech that has been passed down to us was likely crafted by Arrian rather than Alexander, the conqueror's actual words are now lost to time. Nevertheless, Arrian had access to eyewitness accounts that have since vanished (primarily those of Ptolemy and Nearchus), and contemporary historians widely concur that the speech was a genuine historical occurrence and that Arrian provides an accurate depiction of its probable substance. Setting aside its disputed and debated value as a historical source, the scene, as portrayed in Arrian's work, is a masterfully written moment of intense drama and emotion. In it, Alexander first acknowledges his debt to his father Philip before launching into a vehement monologue, enumerating his own awe-inspiring accomplishments and exceptional leadership qualities.
