The fighting Genre took hold of teenage boys everywhere in the mid 90,s.
It began in the 70's with Championship Karate, 1 vs 1 boxing and 2 d scrolling games but Street Fighter would be the first of its kind to include special moves for the characters. Its sequel Street Fighter 2 would give people a choice of 8 unique fighters with their own fighting styles and special moves competing in a fighting tournament. Others would follow but only one would innovate and break the Street Fighter scene up by giving them a choice of cartoon like characters with embellished moves and abilities or realistic fighters with hyper violent gameplay.
When Mortal Kombat began to get attention it was driven into legendary status when parents to busy to raise their children did not think they should be keeping quiet while playing violent video games. How the hell were the parents going to finish scar face or Friday the 13th.
It would get a 18+ rating every iteration to release up until current day with only Nintendo willing to censor the games, even turning the blood from red to green to be less obvious the fluid flying out of the body being imp-ailed was leaking a radio active green juice. (That's more frightening then blood leaking if you ask me)
that was 30years ago and several upgrades later.
Now its a world wide phenomenon, tournaments are held around the world, entire channels are designated for ranked competitive play like RIPS ARENA
