On December 28, 2024, at approximately 11:30 p.m., two individuals were standing outside a church in the 1700 block of East 114th Street when they were confronted by an armed suspect. The assailant, later identified as 54-year-old Kevin Doby of Los Angeles, brandished an AK-style rifle and demanded their belongings. However, instead of complying, the victims fought back, tackling Doby to the ground. A struggle ensued as they attempted to wrest control of the firearm.

At that moment, Southeast Patrol Division officers conducting routine patrols noticed the altercation. As they approached, one of the victims repeatedly shouted, “He’s got a gun!” Officers immediately requested backup and issued multiple verbal commands for Doby to drop the weapon. The victims then tried to disengage from the struggle, at which point an Officer-Involved Shooting (OIS) occurred. Doby managed to rearm himself with the rifle and attempted to flee, prompting a second OIS. He was struck by gunfire and dropped the weapon beneath a parked car before officers repositioned and took him into custody without further incident.

Doby sustained gunshot wounds and was transported to a local hospital, where he was listed in stable condition. Both victims were also hit by gunfire and were treated at a separate hospital, also in stable condition. Authorities recovered a loaded black and brown AK-style .22 caliber rifle and a three-inch folding knife from the scene. No officers or bystanders were injured during the incident. Doby was arrested and charged with armed robbery under California Penal Code 211 PC.
