The Crusades were critical in preventing total Islamic subjugation of Christendom. Muslim jihad had taken 75% of Christendom, destroying churches, enslaving and butchering non-Muslims, and after 400 years, the church finally responded. This was a last stand to save Europe from Muslim conquest, to live free, rather than as dhimmis, slaves, converts, or killed for refusal to convert. They were a pivotal moment in history.
