Colossus: The Forbin Project (1970) | A.I. & Nuclear Automated Response System | Timeline Warnings

Tonight I’m focusing on films that deal with A.I. & A.R.S. (Automated Response Systems). This seems to be a theme in many films dealing with the topic of Artificial Intelligence…from WarGames (1983) to 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) to Alphaville (1965)…the list goes on and on…I’ll also be discussing VIRUS: The End & Wrong is Right, both of which deal with A.I. or Computer Based Automated Response Systems to nuclear attacks…in other words, computers that will disregard human instruction & start or respond to nuclear attacks.

Colossus deals with this theme directly & since it’s a little known film from 55 years ago, I thought we should give it a review before some of the other more obvious choices…I was ‘this’ close to picking WarGames but we’ll wait another night for that one.

The film is about an advanced American defense system, named Colossus, becoming sentient. After being handed full control, Colossus' draconian logic expands on its original nuclear defense directives toassume total control of the worldand end all warfare for the good of humankind, despite its creators' orders to stop.

This is worth discussing as things get increasingly more bizarre with these tech ‘gurus’ making more and more reckless decisions on our behalf
