They say it is the oldest game played by the Maltese. The game of Bocci has an ancestry that dates back to the early roman empire, and has developed to its present day form in countries such as france, italy, malta, and australia. according to earlier accounts, maltese bocci was first introduced during the period of the Knights of St. John in the 1500s.

The aim of the game is to have as many of the other bocci as close as possible. It can be played by up to 3 players each side. Each team have a set of 3 round bocci and 8 cylindrical bocci. The round ones are used to get as close as possible to the jack ball better known as “il-likk”. The cylindrical ones are used to either create a barrier near the likk or throw your opponent out of play.

In this video, I had the pleasure to meet one of the Malta Bocci Legends, the veteran Champion Harold Galea better known as ‘Annamarie’.
